On October 22, 1999, 60-year-old expert parachutist Jan Davis took part in a protest jump from Yosemite’s El Capitan—breaking National Park rules banning BASE jumping. She used borrowed gear to avoid confiscation of her own, but the ripcord was in an unfamiliar position. Mid-fall, she reached for her usual spot—but it wasn’t there. After a 20-second plunge, she struck the rocks below as her husband watched in horror. Known as the First Lady of Angel Falls, Jan’s death shocked the BASE community.
